Ch'an Dharma master Xu Yun (1840-1959) was a great man. He had no wealth and little material possessions, other than the Buddhist robes he wore, and the pot he ate out of. What he did possess however, was the 'True Dharma Eye' for this generation. He was fully enlightened and carried the Ch'an Dharma forward. He taught many thousnds of people and had many students who carried on the teachings of 'Mind to Mind' transmission of the lamp. One of the these students was called Charles Luk (Upasaka Lu Kuan Yu). He dedicated his life to not only to practicing the Dharma, but also to translating as many Chinese Buddhist books as possible into English so that Western students might benefit from his wisdom and insight.
Richard Hunn (Upasaka Wen Shu), has practiced Ch'an for many years, as well as being an esteemed academic and English langugae teacher. Richard trained under the guidance of Charles Luk for a number of those years. Today, whilst living in Japan, Richard continues the Ch'an tradition whilst working tirelessly in the endeavour of trying to keep Charles Luk's English translations of Chinese texts in print and available in the West.
Richard Hunn is my teacher, and through discussion with him, we have decided to create this website to honour the Ch'an tradition and to remember the sacrifices master Xu Yun had to endure in his long lifetime, and the committment of Charles Luk in his translation efforts.
We sincerely wish to make the Ch'an Dhama teachings available to as many people as possible and keep the tradition alive. Through this website, we shall endeavour to post useful and meaningful articles and explanantions of all things 'Chinese Buddhist'. As well as make it aware to the general public that we hold informal Ch'an meditation classes.
