In this process there can be no mercy. The ego, fuelled by timeless habit, always obscures the Pure Mind until a gap is forced in its never-ending stream of delusion. It must be struck down with the sword of wisdom. This is compassion that frees humanity.
The ego is a bundle of greed, hatred and delusion. Its encouragement through appeasement will never lead to its transcendence. To allow ego to be unchecked, is an act of gross abandonment. The ego will try to defend itself with an increased manifestation of klesic activity, and a student who has experienced Ch'an dialogue can react in three ways:
1) Complete freedom and total abandonment of ego in an instant. 2) Going to a quiet place to contemplate what has happened, and 'ingest' its deep meaning. 3) A violent increase in delusional activity, that attacks the Ch'an master with all the power disrespect can muster.
Bravery is required in two ways:
a) The Ch'an master must be fearless and act without doubt. b) A sincere student must be prepared for the ego to die with no regrets whatsoever.
Energy must be focused and all negativity transformed into peaceful bliss. This process is timeless and must not die-out due to fear, ignorance or doubt. The Dharma Banner must be planted firmly in to the ground and the spiritual warrior must protect it with all the might of Dharmic practice.

Gassho, Shi da Dao.
The Buddha :
" Those who really seek the path to enlightenment dictate terms to their mind. They then proceed with strong determination. Be urgent in good : hold your thoughts off evil. When one is slack in doing good the mind delights in evil."
Peace in the Dharma.
