The photographs below are of the relics found within the ashes of master Xu Yun's cremation in 1959. Seeing that he had passed away, they immediately informed the Abbot and the whole community who gathered to read sutras to bid farewell to the Master and then took turns to recite the Buddha's name by day and night.
The Master's body was encoffined on the 18th and when it was cremated on the 19th, the air was filled with a rare fragrance and a white smoke went up into the sky. In the ashes were found over a hundred large relics of five different colours and countless small ones which were mostly white; all of them were clean and brilliant in appearance. On the 21st, the ashes were placed in the the stupa.
