I received the following in my email today, and heard a very informative programme about this event on the BBC World Service:
'How People in India are embracing Buddhism in the month of October 2006 .View Pictures, Visit:- www.bwtl.org
Esteemed Sir,
On Ashok Vijaydashmi 2nd October 2006 over two million people from all part of India and world (Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Burma, ShriLanka, Nepal, Australia, United Kingdom, USA and Canada) would be commemorating the greatest historical conversions of over 2.5 million Dalits to Buddhism under the leadership of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, The principle architect of Indian constitution . The Dhamma Deeksha on 14th October 1956, (Ashok Vijayadashmi, the day when the smrat Ashoka, the great adopted the Dhamma Policy for welfare of his society) was taken to reconstruct the Indian social system (based on varna and caste) to that to equality-liberty- fraternity -justice. It was a Liberation from the Hindu caste & varna system which has degraded 85% of India ’s population as untouchables, Shudras and adivasis.
The golden jubilee celebration would be attended by over 2 million people across the country and also ambassadors of different countries. It would be over a number of intellectual and cultural events. Also one million people in different state of India from dalit, tribal & backward communities are expected to embrace Buddhism in the month of October 2006 itself.
The global community should take cognizance of these developments which have a larger significance for humanity as in the decades to come India ’s majority population would be embracing Buddhism. This would change the governing philosophy of India both nationally and internationally. The Buddhist would also be a positive element for a better humanity.
