Welcome to SHANTIDEVA-NET, the home of the Shantideva Society, a non-sectarian association of Buddhist practioners dedicated to the Bodhisattva ideal as it relates to social service, environmentalism, and world peace.
Central to the unity of this association is the respect that is shown to all schools of Buddhism, a respect that is required of all it's members, in the belief that those who walk the path of a Bodhisattva are not to be teachers of the Buddha-dharma by words alone, but by being a living example of the ideal.
Advocating a Buddha-dharma that is neither specifically Mahayana or Theravada, but instead is based on the teachings shared in common by both, the members of the Shantideva Society strive not only to be a reflection of the early Buddhist community in their practice, but also a true embodiment of compassion and loving-kindness in action, as found in the writings of Shantideva.
"Shantideva" is a reference to Master Shantideva, a young monk who lived at the university of Nalanda during the 7th/8th century and was a representative of the Madhyamika school of the Mahayana tradition. The oldest son of a king in South India, Shantideva is best remembered for writing the Bodhicaryavatara, which is not only an inspiration to Buddhists, but also to people of other faiths, and is still to this day revered as the foundation of the Bodhisattva way of life.
