Licchavi Vimalakirti came to the foot of that tree and said to me, Reverend Sariputra, this is not the way to absorb yourself in contemplation. You should absorb yourself in contemplation so that neither body nor mind appear anywhere in the triple world. You should absorb yourself in contemplation in such a way that you can manifest all ordinary behavior without forsaking cessation. You should absorb yourself in contemplation in such a way that you can manifest the nature of an ordinary person without abandoning your cultivated spiritual nature.

A person who has not uprooted greed, hatred and delusion, and has not realised the essence of the empty mind ground, is not qualified to teach the Dharma. If such an unqualified person assumes a position of authority - then all he or she shares amongst the people is their 'non-enlightenment'. They sustain their dominance through force and threat and enjoy the terror they inflict. Many groups in the West are like this as they are led by deluded beings who are spreading their delusion far and wide. None of this is difficult to work-out or encounter - as this warning exists in virtually all Buddhist sutras! Teaching is a natural matter of genuine and profound attainment. It is the ordinary people that choose their teachers and lift them up into a temporarily prominent position.
