Within the Ch’an School the Master applies the gaze of unbearable compassion because in their purified mind there is no greed, hatred or delusion, and no obscuring defilements. This is a deep and profound spiritual reality that cannot be defined through language or converted for use by any other ideology or world view. However, such a Master will direct a student left or right depending upon their natural bias. This is the use of ‘expedient means’ or ‘skillful means’ whereby certain interactions may appear to be ‘intense’ and ‘real’ but are in reality simply developmental mirages designed to serve as a means to an end. All is empty and all-embracing from the very beginning despite the illusion of substantiality as interaction. All is achieved but no one achieves it. Non-attachment at the beginning, non-attachment in the middle and non-attachment at the end.
