The 'word' arises from the psychic fabric - 'W'-'O'-'R'-'D' - but when the hua tou is used the gap between the word is clearly seen and the emerging process is reversed from 'W'-'O'-'R'-'D' to 'D'-'R'-'O'-'W' - so that the 'origin' is clearly discernable. Once realised - sight of the empty mind ground is never lost.
