The Inward Battle is True Monasticism!Monasticism is often depicted as a “one-size fits-all” answer to the various vicissitudes of outer lives. What utter nonsense all this is. It has led to laypersons who make no effort to develop wearing ecclesiastical robes and walking around with an assumed air of “superiority” pretending to possess a knowledge and wisdom. There are also “monks” who have traversed the various rituals of “ordination” who have made no effort to inwardly develop – being quite happy to eat regularly and sleep well. On the other hand, there are impoverished lay men, women, and children (not to mention various animals) that have achieved complete and full enlightenment – with not a single robe amongst them. Enlightenment does not guarantee wealth or status – why should it? After-all, the Buddha owned nothing – not even his body - or the robe wrapped around it....
