Master Xu Yun (1840-1959) originally transmitted the Ch'an Dharma to Master Xuan Hua in 1948 - 'mind to mind' - but did not issue a formal Transmission Certificate until 1956. In the meantime, Master Xuan Hua was considered a Dharma-Inheritor from 1948 onwards. This situation is not uncommon within Chinese Buddhism. Sometimes certain transmissions remain only 'mind to mind' with no certification - whilst others are ritualistic and immediately involve official certification but no 'mind to mind' component, etc. Obviously, this is a Buddhist monastic transmission, with lay equivalents probably (and only) involving informal (or symbolic) acts of transmission. The most important part of this information is the hand-written Transmission Certificate from Master Xu Yun: Extracted from: Records of the Life of Ch'an Master Hsuan Hua - Part II' Dharma Realm Buddhist Scripture Centre, (1991)
